There is something mesmerising about the mountains in winter. Snow covers almost everything, softening the landscape until the world seems to consist of little more than white, pale blue and the occasional glimpse of grey rock.
High above Zell am See and Kaprun, the Austrian Alps stretch into the distance, their peaks disappearing into clouds and mist. On days like these, the boundary between earth and sky becomes almost impossible to distinguish. The light is beautifully diffused, the colours muted, and the sense of space extraordinary.
Yet, amidst all that white, little bursts of colour catch the eye. A bright orange jacket, a red cable car suspended above the slopes, or a solitary marker standing against an almost endless blanket of snow. Small interruptions in an otherwise quiet landscape.
Perhaps that is what makes these winter scenes so fascinating. The simplicity of the surroundings allows the smallest details to become something special. A reminder that sometimes, a little colour is all it takes to break the white.
